I stayed home from school for the next three days, only leaving the house to visit Shelly’s. Merrin was staying at her house for now. She said she couldn’t go home yet.

“I should have told you when he came to me.” Maybe I could have stopped this.

But Merrin refused to accept my apology. “It wouldn’t have changed anything, Ev. I wouldn’t have taken him back. I only would have felt guiltier about it.”

She wiped her eyes. “He wasn’t ok. People don’t just do things like that unless there’s something wrong with them inside.” Another tear tracked down her face. “He was sick, Ev. It’s nobody’s fault.”

She was right, but that didn’t stop the knot of guilt from twisting in my stomach.

“I’m so glad it wasn’t you,” I whispered. “I was so sure he was going to kill you.”

My voice rose. “I would have said anything. I would have done anything.” It broke as I cried, “I wouldn’t be able to make it without you, Mer.”

She smiled sadly. “I told you, Ev. You’ll never lose me.”
